Much of the innovative scientific work of a conference happens outside the formal sessions. Social events are important venues for fostering new contacts and discussing science. To facilitate interactions between participants in casual venues, several activities have been planned for you.
Mixer buffet
Participants are invited to the mixer buffet, to be held Sunday evening, August 29, 6:00 p.m., at the Palais des congrès, Room 710. Come meet old friends and colleagues and get acquainted with other participants in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

George Cheniae Memorial Blues Concert and smoked meat night
This event will be held in the Palais des congrès in Room 710 on Tuesday, August 31, at 7:30 p.m. The 13th International Congress of Photosynthesis proudly presents Bill Rutherford's famous Baskerville Blues Band for your musical entertainment, promising to make you dance till you drop! It will feature Montreal's famous "old fashion" smoked meat.

Closing Banquet
To close the 13th International Congress of Photosynthesis on Friday, September 3, participants are invited to a wonderful evening where good food and entertainment reflect Montréal's tradition of hospitality. Cocktail will start at 6:00 p.m., followed by dinner in the Panoramic Room (710) of the Palais des congrès.

You can choose one of the three following tours, set for Wednesday, September 1, 2004. The departure time of each tour is 2:30 p.m., from Le Foyer Bleury at the Palais des congrès.
Old Montreal Walk and the Museum of Archeology
In this historic part of the city founded in 1642, you will discover Old Montreal history and charms. A stroll through a maze of narrow lanes and old buildings provides a perfect opportunity to discover our colourful past. With their exuberant display of architecture, the streets and buildings testify to Montreal's rich heritage and illustrate a period of its history. The tour will feature a number of remarkable restorations that have breathed new life into the Old Port: City Hall, the Bonsecours Markets and municipal buildings, the old business section, Notre Dame de Bonsecours church, Jacques Cartier Square and the majestic Notre-Dame Basilica.
The highlight of this tour is Pointe-à-Callière where archaeological digs, initiated more than 10 years ago, brought over 1000 years of history to light. The Pointe-à-Callière Museum comprises 2 sites depicting the development of Montréal.

Discover Mont Saint-Hilaire Nature Center
Mont Saint-Hilaire was the first site in Canada to be recognized as a Biosphere reserve within the Unesco "Man and the Biosphere" program. It is of exceptional interest as a migratory bird sanctuary and as a Nature Conservation Center. With more than 12 different minerals, 12 species of reptiles (all harmless to man), 178 species of birds and 600 species of high plants. You will have the opportunity to walk (3 km to 5 km path) with a student of McGill University who will guide you to the summit for a fascinating view of the region.

Biodôme and Botanical Garden
Travel along the St. Lawrence River to the Botanical Garden, the second largest in the world after the one in London and discover more than 26,000 species of flowers and plants in 30 outside gardens and 10 greenhouses. Of special interest: the Bonsai and the orchids collections as well as the Chinese Garden. This is THE gem of Montreal Green!
The next visit will bring you to the Biodôme, a unique concept of a "living" museum. Wander through four full scale natural ecosystems of the Americas: the Tropical Forest, the St. Lawrence Marine, the Laurentian Forest and the Polar World, complete with landscapes, waterfalls, rivers, flora and birds, animals and fish.

Tour for Accompanying Persons
The tour is set for Monday, August 30, from 1:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
The departure will be from Le Foyer Bleury at the Palais des congrès.
Montréal, c'est magnifique !
Discover Montreal's cultural heritage and cosmopolitan blend of the old and new on this overview tour of our city. Old Montreal, the financial and commercial districts, Westmount and its opulent residences, see our universities, the Olympic park and the world renowned St.Joseph Shrine. The tour includes a stop on Mount Royal for a panoramic view of Montreal and a visit of Notre-Dame Basilica. We will drive through Sainte-Hélène and Notre-Dame Islands. A stop is planned at the Biosphere, an architectural gem of Buckminster Fuller, dating back from the World Exhibition of 1967 and located in the formerly American Pavilion. It is the only museum in North America that is dedicated to water, particularly to the St.Lawrence River and the Great Lakes. You will meet with an environmentalist who will address the issue of water conservation.

Post-Tour
The Post-Tour is available for the participants and accompanying persons on Saturday, September 4, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Rendez-vous à Québec
Classified as a UNESCO heritage site in 1985, the city of Quebec, capital of the province of Quebec, is the only remaining entirely fortified city in North America. Founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain, Quebec was the first permanent European settlement in New France. A natural citadel, the site dominates the St.Lawrence river. Renowned for its European flavour, the city offers a rich architecture. During the tour, you will see Notre Dame, the Plains of Abraham, the Citadel, the Parliament and the famous Château Frontenac. There will be lunch included in a reputed establishment of the city. Don't forget your camera.
